River Rehab revolution

JUKSKEI PARK – Green Beings initiative to clean up the Klein Jukskei River will kick up a notch this year and all nature-loving residents are invited to join in on the fun.

“This on-going community project promotes the remediation and use of natural areas and parks adjoining rivers and streams connected to the Klein Jukskei River,” said Alex Frost from Green Beings, a non-profit organisation which focuses on sustainable and eco-friendly living.

The organisation conducts regular events at the Klien Jukskei Spruit Park to encourage the preservation of local biodiversity and for communities to enjoy previously-unused spaces.

Green beings are aiming to:

  • Clean up and remove litter from the river and park
  • Create awareness for the importance of healthy river systems
  • Promote active citizenship and stewardship
  • Monitor water health and quality
  • Remove invasive alien vegetation
  • Introduce indigenous vegetation
  • Increase local biodiversity

“We would also like to call on people who are keen to be champions for new areas to join us at the event,” stated Roxy Lourens, another Green Beings representative. “They must let us know if there are other areas that need conserving so that we can expand the initiative to other areas in Joburg.”

The River Rehab will take place on 28 March at the Klein Jukskei Spruit Park and it will start at 8.30am. There will be a jumping castle to keep children entertained and a picnic will be held around 12pm. Bags, gloves, food and refreshments will be provided.

“Those attending need not stay the whole day, giving just an hour of your time will be appreciated,” Lourens concluded.
