Triumph South Africa celebrates 20 years

KYALAMI – Motorcycle enthusiasts congregated in celebration of Triumph Motorcycles' second decade in South Africa.

Triumph Motorcycles, the iconic British motorcycling brand established in 1984, began being imported to South Africa in ’95 and has since grown a large domestic fan base in the country.

The South African branch of the brand has hosted a Triumph Day successfully for the past four years and brand manager, Arnold Olivier, explained that the day is about passionate Triumph riders, their families and good, clean motorcycling fun.

“This is really a social event for our loyal supporters and the theme this year was to showcase how far Triumph has come in South Africa over the last 20 years,” stated Olivier.

Apart from great entertainment provided by folk musicians Brian Finch and Wayne Coughlan, contests were also held for the best modern, classic and custom-built Triumphs.

The title for Best Classic Motorcycle went to Colin Blackburn, while ‘Bombshell Bonnie’, a ’69 Bonneville T120R owned by brothers Don and Marchun Bobber, won the trophy for Best Custom Motorcycle. The title for Best Modern Motorcycle was won by Geoff Larney for his Scrambler 900.

Olivier explained that customisation of Triumph motorcycles has become very popularised in recent years and that there were a good couple of fine examples on display at the event.

“Triumph riders consider themselves to be part of the more discerning motorcycling enthusiasts and therefore don’t think of themselves as ‘bikers’,” Olivier chuckled. “They were here today to enjoy good food, music and company of fellow Triumph fans.”
