Bryanston Scout earns top honour

BRYANSTON - Resident and St David’s School pupil, Thomas Tumiel, received the highest honour in the South African Scouting world when he was awarded the prestigious Springbok Scout badge.

To earn the badge Tumiel, who has been an active Scout for 10 years, had to plan, organise and lead a team of Scouts in completing a number of special projects. As part of his community service project, he built a permanent pedestrian and cyclist bridge across a stream near the corner of Hamilton and Devonshire avenues in Bryanston. He also organised a four-day hiking trip for a group of senior Scouts in the amphitheatre region of the Drakensberg mountains.

Gary Pienaar of the Bryanston Scout Group said the award was an integral part of the Scout Movements’ progressive system of training and personal development.

He added, “Scouting challenges its members to experience fun, friendship and everyday adventure in an outdoor setting, helping them to reach their full potential whilst having a positive impact on society.”

Tumiel was one of 13 Scouts from Gauteng to be presented with the Springbok Scout badge and certificate by the Gauteng Regional Commissioner Dave Osmond, at an awards ceremony held at the Gilwell Scout Camp in Florida.

Osmond thanked the parents and adult leaders for their support of the young Scouts adding that the achievement was the culmination of many hours of hard work over a number of years. He said, “It is the mark of someone who has done their best and persevered in completing the varied requirements for this award.”
