Flood headaches for residents

DOUGLASDALE - Houses on Juweel Street in Jukskei Park were flooded by rain water on 17 February.

According to Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana, the flooding was due to debris and off-cut branches that are in the river.

“The over-grown trees and debris are causing strain to the bridge, and heavy rainfall exacerbates the situation,” he said.

Irate by the situation, Santana and Susan Mottram, the founder of the Douglasdale Business Forum, approached the Johannesburg Roads Agency and City Parks to help rectify the situation.

According to Santana, 36 hours has passed and nothing and no one had come to help.

Santana said, “Excess debris and trees need to be removed on a regular basis, not only when these situations occur. Moreover, a better solution needs to be developed for the bridge to accommodate heavy rainfall.”

He has escalated the issue to the Mayor of Joburg and relevant officials in the City to rectify and address the issue.

He believed there is a mere ‘passing of the buck’ scenario occurring and that the community is bearing the brunt of it.

Fourways Review is awaiting comment from the City and updates will follow.
