WONDERboom’s birthday bash

FOURWAYS – One of South Africa’s musical heavyweight bands, WONDERboom is planning to host the birthday bash of the century and invites all Fourways’ music lovers to come celebrate with them.

The band will be turning 19 years old this year and they have put together a great line-up for their birthday soiree which will be held at Smuggler’s Pub on 27 February from 8pm.

“I can’t believe we’ve been doing the WONDERboom thing for 19 years, it still feels like we’re only 19 years old. I guess the rock ‘n roll has kept us young,” said WONDERboom frontman, Cito Otto.

The band has much to be proud of. They have released eight albums, headlined every major South African music festival and been nominated for five South African Music Awards. They also won a Kanna Award and the People Crystal Award in 2003 for South Africa’s hottest band. They won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands too and came second worldwide, all while maintaining the level of music that audiences love.

Always a crowd favourite at festivals and intimate venues alike, they are currently in studio again working on their ninth album. The band has promised fans who attend their birthday celebrations a sneak preview as to what to expect from their latest offering.

Groundbreaking local trio, The Anti Retro Vinyls, will also perform at the event, and local all-girl band, Skarlit, who will be the opening act.

“It’s kind of like a rock ‘n roll timeline of bands, playing timeless music together,” continued Otto. “As far as our performance is concerned, expect a couple of new tracks that will be featured on our forthcoming album, as well as a couple of old favourites.”
