Bryanston’s basketball star

BRYANSTON resident and basketball prodigy Luca Lunneman will be making waves in New York as he leaves on 11 February to represent South Africa at the first ever Basketball without Borders (BWB) Global Camp.

Lunneman (17) is a star point guard at Michael Mount Waldorf School and was selected to attend the BWB Africa Camp in 2013 and 2014. He will join 50 other 17-year-old players from 20 countries at the BWB Global camp. The camp is a National Basketball Association (NBA) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) global basketball development programme which takes place during the NBA all-star weekend from 13 February to 15 February.

Spokesperson for NBA Africa, Kauanda Chama said the programme uses the sport to create positive social change in the areas of education, health and wellness. He added, “Thirty nine Basketball Without Borders camps have been hosted in 22 cities in 19 countries on five continents since 2003.”

Lunneman said that he got his love for basketball from his mother Dubravka Lunneman, who is a basketball player herself and is the basketball head coach at her Michael Mount Waldorf School. She taught him about the sport from a young age, and when he found out that his school offered it as an extra-curricular activity he jumped at the opportunity to participate and hone his skills.

Having participated in the 2014 BWB Africa camp and winning the Most Valuable Player award, Lunneman shone as one of the camp’s top players.

Lunneman said, “I have always wanted to go to New York and watch basketball, so this is a dream come true for me. I never expected that something like this would ever happen to me but now that it has, I am extremely excited. I know that it is going to be a different level of game play, but I have been putting in a lot of work and training every day.”

He concluded that he has received a great deal of support from his parents as well as his school and hopes to make them all proud at the global development camp.
