Junior golf star continues to rise

DAINFERN - Multi-talented golfer Charles Rose-Innes (8) continues to bud in the world of golf.

The rising star is a pupil at Dainfern College and proud father Andrew said his son first showed his keen interest in the sport at the tender age of two. “We live on a golf estate in Dainfern and he would often mess around hitting the golf ball,” said Andrew. “That was when I first noticed that he was left-handed.”

The father and son spent much time hitting golf balls on the driving range, and to further develop his son’s skills Andrew enrolled him at SA Kids Golf.

Andrew said last year, Charles finished in joint first place with a personal best score of 37 shots for nine holes in the SA Kids Southdowns Junior Open hosted by SA Kids Golf. The father-son duo has toured with SA Kids Golf which has allowed Charles to play against his peers all around the country. “We have been to Cape Town, Mpumalanga and Durban,” said Andrew.

He said he would continue to support his son’s golfing career as long as Charles was still keen on playing golf. “It depends on him,” said Andrew.

Through the SA Kids Southdowns Junior Open, Charles has qualified to play in a two-day tournament to be hosted by the Bronkhorstspruit Country Club. If successful, he will be given the chance to test his skills internationally in either Malaysia or the United States of America.

Andrew said he encouraged his son to play more than one sport and he also participates in tennis, hockey and cricket.
