Norscot Manor receives blue plaque status

NORSCOT – Norscot Manor, the Cape Dutch landmark that has grown to have great sentimental value to the Fourways community, has received its blue plaque status from the city.

On 31 January, the City of Joburg installed the plaque on the walls of the iconic landmark that was built in 1937. The plague acknowledged the historical value of the building.

Jo Warden, member of the Friends of Norscot (FON), spoke with great joy and relief upon the news.

Warden said, “I am very excited to announce that it’s a reality.”

She added that the declaration of Norscot Manor as a heritage site means that the Friends of Norscot achieved their goal of the preservation of the manor.

She said the building can now stand without threat of being demolished and future generations could enjoy it.

Warden has a sentimental attachment to Norscot Manor. She said her mother was a dance teacher at the manor and her grandmother got married on its grounds, which now serve as a community centre.

She said she and other FON members gave heartfelt thanks to the community members and ward councillors that were active in lobbying for the blue plaque.
