According to Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, head of communications for the Diepsloot police, the 26-year-old man was involved in a hit-and-run accident on 26 January.
Mavimbela said the suspect swerved out of the road and crashed his minibus taxi into a supermarket’s steel doors in Diepsloot Ext 4. Two women were trapped in between his taxi and the door. One victim died on the scene and the other is still receiving treatment at a local hospital. She is alleged to be in a serious condition.
Witnesses at the scene said that after the crash, the suspect fled the scene. He abandoned his taxi at the scene without reporting the accident. Mavimbela said the taxi has since been impounded.
On 3 February, the suspect turned himself over to Diepsloot police.
According to Mavimbela, the suspect will be charged with culpable homicide, driving without a licence, reckless and negligent driving and failing to report an accident.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
