VIDEO: Suprising twist to alleged assault incident

PINESLOPES - An argument at a shopping centre allegedly turned into an assault incident between three men and a group of security guards.

A friend of one of the men who witnessed the incident but does not want to be named, said in the early hours of 21 January a father (45) and his two sons, aged 20 and 24, were having a verbal disagreement outside a bar at the centre when security guards from a local security company arrived and intervened.

According to the witness, about 15 security guards sprayed the father and sons with pepper spray and beat them with batons. “When the security guards saw that they [the father and his sons] weren’t going to back down, one of the guards picked up a brick and threw it at the father’s head and then kicked him under a car,” the witness added.

The witness said she tried to video what was taking place with her cellphone but one of the security guards noticed and threatened to throw a rock at her.

The witness claimed the father and his sons’ injuries were extremely severe. “The older brother’s eye was smashed open and the younger brother had been beaten so badly with batons that he had internal bruising.”

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for Douglasdale police said that, to his knowledge, the father and sons had not opened a case of assault against the security company. However, he added that in the event a member of the public feels aggrieved in any way by any security company, they are well within their rights to complain and open a case.

A twist in the story came on 27 January when the security company opened a case of assault against the father and sons instead.

The security company was contacted for comment, and while they confirmed that the case of assault had been opened, they asked to reserve their comment until after judgement was made.
