A ‘hole’ lot of problems

SUNNINGHILL – Debbie Kreunen, a Sunninghill resident, has been dealing with a massive hole in front of her home for the past nine months.

The hole came after a planned project was done by Joburg Water, with the contractors failing to fill it up.

According to Kreunen who lives on Tana Road, the construction site was left unattended to and neglected. Kreunen was informed that the project will affect her drive way, however this was the last of her worries.

Contractors allegedly left their materials, including bricks and mortar on her driveway, making it impossible for her to access her garage.

“I could not even get into my house. I have been very patient and co-operative, but this has gone on for too long,” she said.

The gaping eyesore in front of her home has been unattended since March last year. “It has become a serious problem, not only is it an eyesore, but it’s a health hazard for the community,” said Kreunen.

Water becomes stagnant after heavy rains and causes a foul smell to occur, as well as increases mosquito infestation. “Nobody seems to care that a car or even a person, a small child, could fall into the site resulting in a major injury,” said Kreunen.

Her driveway has almost disintegrated due to the heavy materials used on the project. According to Rob Kimmings, the chairperson of the Sunninghill Gardens Residents’ Association, both he and Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe are working hard to get this problem resolved.

“There are electrical power cable issues that need to be corrected from Eskom before the contractors can continue,” said Kimmings.

When reached for comment, Eleanor Mavimbela, communications officer for Joburg Water, stated that contractors had been sent out to investigate the situation and a backfill project will soon be underway. However, no time or date was specified.

Kruenen hopes that this problem is soon resolved. “If we all work together as a community, this can be resolved quicker.”
