Protea fans dazzle in pink
WANDERERS- The One Day International between the West Indies and the Proteas at the Wanderers Stadium on 18 January was set aside as a pink day in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Go Pink initiative encouraged supporters to wear pink to the cricket to show their support for and raise awareness for cancer. In true ‘pink style’ cricket fans came in their thousands in support of the initiative and the Proteas. To show their support, the Proteas played in an all-pink kit for the match.
“We are very happy to support as it’s a great initiative,” said cricket fan Marie Wright.
To some fans the initiative hit close to home. “My daughter-in-law passed away from cancer five months ago,” said Sandy Rowntree.
The fundraising drive supports PinkDrive, an organisation committed to improving breast cancer education and awareness, and to providing preventative screening services to women (and men) across South Africa.
Speaking at a breakfast launch days earlier, Deputy Minister of Sports and Recreation Gert Oosthuizen lauded the sponsors and supporters of the charity initiative. “Pink Drive must be commended for their efforts in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer,” he said.
