Puppy escapes dog fighting ring

CHARTWELL - Horror stories of dog fighting have been making headlines recently, but Ark Animal Centre's newest resident proved that there can be light at the end of a dark tunnel.

The Chartwell-based shelter took in a four-month-old pitbull which they named Dina. According to Candice Eilertsen of the shelter, Dina was saved by an animal lover from a squatter camp near Chartwell. The man rescued Dina because he found out that she was going to be used for dog fighting. Eilertsen said the man bought Dina from the people that were keeping her and then tried to sell her to a better home. A woman he approached to try sell Dina to drove him and the puppy to Ark Animal Centre. Dina’s ears had been cut, but apart from that she was in a good condition. Ark offered Dina’s rescuer a job at the shelter, where he will report back about abuse going on in the squatter camp to try to curb the problem.

Dina did not have a long stay at the shelter. A family that already had a male Amstaff dog had been wanting a female dog for ages and instantly fell in love with Dina. At her new home, Dina has lots of space to run around and a warm and safe place to sleep.

“From possible dog fighting ring to sleeping on a pink flower pillow,” Eilertsen said.
