Current e-toll system to be reviewed
JOBURG - Gauteng Premier David Makhura announced that the etoll advisory panel suggested that the etoll system needs to be reviewed and further consultation is needed.
This was announced at the Gauteng Legislature on 15 January.
Makhura said the panel found that more consultation with the public, national government and the three affected metropolitans, namely Joburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane, was needed. The premier advised motorists to continue to pay their etoll bills until a decision is made in February.
Makhura also said the panel recommended that a hybrid funding model was needed as the current system is a burden to low and middle income households, as well as to those who live far from the core of the province.
He also said the current system was not deemed affordable, equitable or sustainable.
Deputy president of the ANC Cyril Ramaphosa would lead the review and government is to consult with the public to find new ways of funding the system, as most people who came in front of the panel agreed that payment was needed for the current and future road expansion and development.
“Gantries will never be white elephants, irrespective of final decisions on etolls, they can never be a wasted investment, said Makhura.
