Neighbourhood watch member shot on patrol

DOUGLASDALE - A 37-year-old man from Tembisa was arrested in Douglasdale for allegedly shooting and wounding a community member who was on neighbourhood watch on the morning of 11 January.

According to Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, standby communications officer for the Honeydew policing cluster, the victim and his colleagues were investigating a burglar alarm that went off at a house in Douglasdale. The neighbourhood watch team spotted two suspects and one of the suspects fired a handgun wounding the 29-year-old victim.

The police were called to the scene immediately and they cordoned off and searched the neighbourhood. One suspect was caught and a handgun was recovered. The serial number of the handgun had been filed off.

A manhunt has been launched for the second suspect.

The victim is receiving treatment at a Fourways hospital. He is reported to be in a stable condition and will be discharged soon.
