Psychiatric hospital has no space for Bryanston stabbing suspect

BRYANSTON - The man accused of the fatal stabbing of Shareen Pillay in Bryanston, is still on the waiting list for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at Sterkfontein Hospital resulting in his case being postponed.

Yengesen Pillay, who has been held in the medical section of Johannesburg Prison, appeared at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 2 December. Senior State Prosecutor Yusuf Baba said that Pillay was number 77 on the waiting list for a bed at the psychiatric hospital and the case would be postponed until 9 February next year.

The suspect’s initial court date on 20 August was postponed to 28 August when Baba finalised arrangements for his psychiatric evaluation. Pillay was then sent for an assessment at Sterkfontein Hospital but the suspect was unable to secure a bed there. He appeared again on 30 September where the case was postponed until 2 December.

The suspect was arrested by police on 19 August in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal following the murder of a woman, identified by the police as Pillay, and believed to be the suspect’s wife, who was found by a motorist outside a Bryanston office complex with approximately 50 stab wounds. The suspect is said to have worked there.

ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaark said she was barely responsive when paramedics arrived at the scene. He said she later died at Mediclinic Sandton after substantial blood loss.
