Young canoe genius

FOURWAYS - Juniors from the Gauteng Canoe Union School League were introduced to basic river canoeing skills to end off the year of league racing. This took place on 22 November in Meyerton on the Klip river with guides on hand to help.

Dylan Browne, a pupil from Fourways, was one of the juniors participating on the day.

He has followed the footsteps of his parents, who also enjoy river canoe racing. At just 13 years of age he has successfully mastered basic river canoeing skills, riding rapids, swimming and recovery in order to prepare for river proficiency testing.

While he will only be allowed to paddle river races in a double boat with an adult until the age of 14, Browne is already proving his competence and ability, while he enjoys the adventurous exciting sport.

The young paddlers however need little assistance as they are exceptionally competent from this early age, and have to be relatively strong swimmers to be allowed to participate in the workshop.

Fun was had all around.
