Saved from the brink of death

SUNNINGHILL - A man, who was brought back from the brink of death 10 years ago, made a visit to Sunninghill Hospital to say thank you to the nurses and doctors who saved his life.

VIn 2004, Bradley Silberman made headlines after he was brutally attacked by a bouncer outside a nightclub.

Silberman was rushed to Sunninghill Hospital after sustaining an injury to his head that caused an acute-subdural haematoma, commonly known as severe bleeding in the brain. Dr Maurizio Zoria, one of the neurosurgeons who treated Silberman said the doctors did not have much hope that he would survive, let alone make the remarkable recovery that he did.

According to Zoria, Silberman was in a critical state, his pupils were already fixed and dilated, which is an indication that his brain had started coning. Zoria explained that coning of the brain occurs when the brain responds to injury by swelling.

“Medical treatment may help to reduce the build-up of pressure, but it is not always possible to stop or reverse this,” he said. “However, we managed to remove the clot and fix the bleed. Incredibly, Bradley not only survived, but also made a full and astounding recovery.”

Silberman is now a successful businessman and owns two flourishing businesses in Johannesburg.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the day his life was miraculously saved, Silberman donated 530 food hampers for each and every nurse at the hospital as he wanted to acknowledge the nurses who stayed by his side when he was at his weakest. Each hamper had a sticker on it which read “Thank you for changing lives, love Brad Silberman”.
