Cat is victim of crossbow shooting

DIEPSLOOT - Four Paws Animal Shelter is caring for a feral cat who was shot with a crossbow.

Merinda Brits of the shelter, which is located just outside Diepsloot, said they received a call from an elderly man who regularly feeds the feral cats at his house in Fourways. The man told the shelter that one of the cats he feeds had been shot with a crossbow by the children that lived next door.

Four Paws retrieved the wounded feline and rushed it to the vet, who removed the arrow. “The poor kitty must have been in the most horrific pain,” Brits said.

The brave cat is now recovering from its ordeal, but Four Paws needs help with the cat’s medical bills.

In October this year, a cat and a rabbit were both shot with pellet guns in the suburb of Lonehill. Many residents suspected that the animals had been shot by children.

At the time, Christine Kuch, spokesperson for the NSPCA, said if someone witnessed an animal or bird being harmed, they should report it to their nearest SPCA as quickly as possible as charges could be laid in terms of the Animal Protection Act.
