Sjambok-assault victim does not press charges

FOURWAYS - The driver of a BMW, who was assaulted by taxi drivers at the corner of William Nicol and Kingfisher Drive on 20 November, has not pressed charges.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police, confirmed that there was no case filed for the assault at the Douglasdale Police Station. Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Danielle Dooley had previously said that the driver of the BMW fled from the scene of the incident before paramedics could assess his injuries.

Dooley said the driver of the BMW had thrown a rock at a taxi driver’s back window and tazered the taxi driver, after he cut the BMW driver off on William Nicol Drive. Seeing the commotion, two other taxi drivers stopped and started to assault the BMW driver with sjamboks.

This was not the first incidence of a traffic-related assault that occurred on 20 November. Earlier that day, a woman was dragged under a car at the corner of William Nicol Drive and Sandton Drive.

Earlier this year, a case of assault was opened at the Douglasdale Police Station after the passenger of a Porsche assaulted another motorist on Witkoppen Road.

Muthan said motorists need to have mutual respect for each other. “We as the police are aware that there are road users who do not obey the Road Traffic Act and do as they please,” he said. “However, the community still needs to keep calm and avoid confrontation.”

“Do not take the law into your own hands,” he added. “Rather take down registration numbers of vehicles that are disobeying the law and report the drivers of these vehicles to Metro police.”
