UPDATE: Robbery is as easy as garage pie

FOURWAYS - Following a video of her robbery going viral, the female motorist involved has decided to give Fourways Review all the details.

Lauren Dibb, a student at Wits Business School, posted the CCTV footage of a suspect stealing a bag out of her car boot at a garage on Kingfisher Drive on her social media platforms to raise awareness of just how easy it is to get robbed.

Dibb said on the night of 13 November, she stopped at the garage to buy milk. She said she tried to lock her car and realised the hazard lights did not flash as they usually did when the vehicle locks, so she pressed the lock button again and dashed into the store.

“Usually I always check my door handle to ensure the vehicle is locked, but I was in such a rush that I just assumed the doors locked the second time when I pressed the button and went into the shop,” Dibb said.

She suspects remote jamming was involved as her car did not lock despite her pressing the lock button twice. “I’ve heard about remote jamming, but it’s never happened to me and I didn’t think it would happen to me,” she said.

Dibb said she did not notice anything suspicious from inside the shop. The CCTV video shows a red car pulling up to Dibb’s car and a passenger from the red car lifting a bag out of the boot of Dibb’s vehicle. The video cuts off after the red car speeds away.

Dibb said she went back to her vehicle after buying milk and drove home. It was only at this time that she realised that her backpack, which was in the boot of her car, was nowhere to be found. Dibb retraced her steps and checked the CCTV footage from a Douglasdale shopping centre before realising that her backpack had actually been stolen at the garage on Kingfisher Drive. Unfortunately the stolen backpack contained Dibb’s laptop, textbooks and study notes.

Even more worrying was the fact that she had to write an exam the next morning. “I managed to borrow notes from classmates, but the experience was really horrible,” she said.
