Fourways boxer dominates the ring

FOURWAYS - Boxer Kevin Lerena knocked out Georgian-born Gogita Gorgiladze in the fourth round of their cruiserweight bout at Emperors Palace on 29 September.

The 22-year-old South African won the WBC youth silver cruiserweight title. Lerena is the first in Africa to be awarded with this title.

He began the fight with controlled speed, stinging Gorgiladze with a juicy left. Referee Thabo Spampool was forced to count out Gorgiladze due to Lerena’s skill.

Lerena stopped Ibrahim Labaran in the second round to claim the vacant WBF Africa junior heavyweight title in September last year. He has improved on his overall fighting performance and this was seen against Argentina-born Marcos Antonio Ahumada in August. Lerena fought only four times during the same period. He uploaded a status on social media just after winning the title, commenting how humbled he is by all the love he has received.

Lerena has now won seven of his 11 professional fights and his latest victory has secured him as one of the major fighters in the country.

Lerena said,” I have a hunger and desire that will not go. It’s great for my career to reach the highest levels in the boxing world.” He will be defending his title on 15 November against a fellow South African boxer, who is yet to be named. However boxing gurus predict Lerena as the favourite to win.
