Stop child hunger

FOURWAYS - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, Fourways Crossing and Stop Hunger Now SA will endeavour to end child hunger on 18 October, but they need the public's help to do so.

According to Tracy Swatts Whitfield of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, the Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event will take place at Fourways Crossing on 18 October. The target will be to package 150 000 meals, to be distributed to early childhood development and daycare centres in Diepsloot.

Each year during the month of October, the United Nations commemorates World Food Day on 16 October. For South African’s this is particularly pertinent because according to the Children’s Institute, there are more than three million children under the age of 17 in the country who experience household hunger.

Of these, children under the age of six suffer from the most devastating effects of malnutrition resulting in permanent brain development impairment.

To reach the desired target of 150 000 packaged meals, there will have to be more than 500 volunteers working to package the meals at the event. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc invites anybody and everybody to contribute to the event.

The group especially needs volunteers, but one can also make a contribution to fund the meals. Volunteers need to register prior to the event. School pupils will receive a community service certificate for their involvement and companies that take part will be able to deduct their donation from tax, and will also earn socio-economic development points on their BEE scorecard. The event starts at 9am, with hour long shifts. Volunteers can work more than one shift. To register for the event visit the Stop Hunger Now website.
