Spring and Charity walk was worth the fun

JOBURG - The annual Spring and Charity walk held by Mix FM, the Lions Club of Midrand and the Morningside Rotary Club was an affair for all to enjoy.

On 28 September, walkers were given an opportunity to walk with their friends, family and pets.

The actual walk was the responsibility of the rotary club. The club’s past president and convener of the walk, John Thornhii said of the three-way partnership, “It is a complicated partnership to understand. However, we made it work.”

“The organisation of the event went well. We were disappointed in the turn out due to a combination of bad weather and a lot of other competing events. We only reveived around 370 entrants, [which is a far cry to the usual numbers that are between 1200 and 2000 entrants].” Despite this, those who went, enjoyed themselves.

Jenna Pearmann-White from Carlswald brought her dogs to take full advantage of the family fun day. “I brought them [her dogs] to enjoy the day and the walk with me.”

There was some entrepreneurial spirit making the rounds as well. Moeketsi Mokgothu came to sell hats and sunglasses. “I did a google search and found out that there would be a charity walk.” Mokgothu said he was grateful to the organisers for having permitted his informal stall on the grounds

Lions Club president Trevor Sturges said, “We supplied food and refreshments for the event. All the funds raised will go to charity.” The club normally makes around R10 000 to R12 000. Sturges was hoping to make that much again this year to help with their various beneficiaries. “Animal shelters, such as Animals in Distress and the SPCA, are beneficiaries. We believe that animals deserve the help as they cannot speak for themselves.” 14 members of the club came to the walk to help raise funds.

Sanny Mlotana, traffic controller, from Mix FM thanked the bands, Cherrykab and Kinky Robot, that kept the crowd on their feet. The station was in charge of the entertainment for the day. “As a station we felt that we need to be proactive, [which is why as employees we came out to the charity walk to lend support].”

Mlotana and some of her other colleagues acted as child minders on the day.
