Huskies attacked by swarm of bees

LANSERIA - Husky Haven, in Chartwell North, was attacked by a swarm of bees on 28 September and two of their dogs were stung to death.

According to the owner of the shelter for huskies, Joanne van Niekerk, the high winds on 28 September blew a bee hive out of one of the trees on the property. The frenzied bees proceeded to sting everything in sight. 25 dogs were stung as well as the three people on the property at the time, including Van Niekerk.

Van Niekerk said the ordeal started at 11am and lasted until 6pm. Van Niekerk said the the first two dogs she came across during the rescue were in very bad shape as one of them, Sonic, was trying to hide under his splash pool and screamed in agony when she tried to pick him up. She then realised that one of the other dogs, Spirit, was already dead from the bee stings.

Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the incident and helped to transport the human victims to Fourways Life Hospital and the remaining 23 dogs to a nearby vet. Van Niekerk said the dogs are being treated for the bee stings and should soon be back at Husky Haven. However, the shelter needs the public’s help to pay for the numerous vet bills.
