Ronnie Healy, a favourite for the derby

KYALAMI - Ronnie Healy, a Beaulieu College alumni and showjumper extraordinaire, will be participating in the annual Galencia Property South African Derby on 5 October.

At a very young age, Healy was introduced to the world of showjumping and became intrigued by this adventurous and magnificent sport.

Healy (30) has returned from showjumping in Europe where he competed for major titles like the Hickstead Derby and Hamburg Derby where he qualified in the top three for both.

He competed frequently and rode a string of horses. He said he had difficulty with his horses because of all the travelling and immense stress. He added that each horse has unique requirements, and all horses need to be exercised and fed differently.

“I loved the shows in Europe, they were amazing and made all the hard work and bad weather worth it, the prize money was fantastic,” he exclaimed.

Healy said that he faced some major challenges, such as the huge expenses to get his horses to Europe to compete in top shows. “The rand exchange rate makes it very difficult for us to have the financial power needed to give it our best,” he said.

He is now based in Kyalami where he is training his horses and other showjumpers at his yard.

Healy spoke to Fourways Review about what his life entails getting ready for the prestigious derby. Leading up to The Galencia Property South African Derby training and preparation is different in comparison to other shows, he said. Riders have to ensure their horses are fit enough to complete obstacles and jumps that are designed to be physically and mentally challenging.

Healy said the derby is a mental challenge and it is about training the body and mind to work together while communicating with the horse. He joked that he has lived and breathed showjumping and has been preparing for the derby on a daily basis. However in his spare time he enjoys watching soccer and considers himself a major soccer fanatic.

Showjumping experts predict Healy will be a top contender in this year’s derby and will give show jumping fans a visual treat.
