Ali, the leading lady at Woodrock Animal Rescue

JOBURG - ALI the dog is considered a heroine at Woodrock Animal Rescue.

This according to Estelle Meldau, the owner of the rescue centre.

Ali was found during the rescue’s outreach programme last November. “We do at least six outreach programmes a year,” commented Meldau. Ali had been sexually abused and was feeding three puppies at the time.

They agreed that she needed to be removed instantly.

Meldau recalled how Ali lay in her bakkie on the way back to the rescue centre totally confused and bewildered, but continued nurturing her babies. On their journey home the rescue team noticed a dead dog in the road. The dog had two pups still feeding on her body. “We took the starving puppies in and attached them to mummy Ali who immediately adopted the babies without question, no hesitation or aggression,” said Meladu.

Woodrock Animal Rescue on average receives 20 calls per day from people who are forced to surrender their beloved pets due to divorce, the economy, dogs not getting along or dogs having behaviour problems, among others. “In rescue terms these people are referred to as ‘dumpers’,” said Meldau.

“We absorb animals that are hurt, knocked down on the roads and we take in the lost and found, space permitting and assist where ever we can,” she added.

Meanwhile, Ali has fully recovered and has a glossy coat with a bubbly confident personality. However, no one has considered adopting her. Meladu pleads with the public to come forth and adopt this beautiful dog.
