Vehicle-related crime continues to plague Sandton sectors

JOBURG - Sandton police have warned residents to be cautious in the face of the continued scourge of vehicle-related crime.

In a summary of crimes reported in the Sandton precinct this week, Captain Kym Cloete, communication official for Sandton Police Station, provided tips for community members to avoid becoming the latest victims of vehicle-related crime in the area.

In Sandton Sector 1, which included Sunninghill, residents reported mostly vehicle-related crimes and burglary, with most incidents taking place in the late afternoon and evening on Tuesday and Thursday. Sector 2 (Lonehill, Rietfontein and Paulshof), meanwhile, similarly reported vehicle-related crime as the most common incident, but saw most crimes being committed on Saturday mornings.

Cloete cautioned residents to beware of suspicious vehicles and car jamming. If asked to stop by a vehicle with flashing lights, Cloete advised motorists to slow down and indicate that they have seen the vehicle, then proceed with hazards flashing to the nearest police station or fuel station, where the presence of officials or cameras will reduce the chances of becoming a victim.

At schools, shopping centres, and other locations with large car parks, motorists were urged to physically check doors after locking their cars with a remote. Criminals are often able to use a jamming device to override an owner’s remote and steal cars.

While driving, community members were urged to exercise caution by keeping vehicles locked, windows closed and valuables out of sight to prevent smash and grabs or hijacking.
