SA music star rides for CANSA

RIVERSANDS - Celebrated local musician Daniel Baron is set to ride the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge in memory of his cousin.

Northcliff resident, Baron, says he has always made time for charity work, raising funds and awareness for causes that mean something to him.

But in November, the award-winning musician will be riding for a cause very close to his heart indeed.

Alongside his band and friends in the music industry, Baron races under the banner Rockstars Ride for Cansa, raising money for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) in memory of his cousin, Matthew, who died a week after his 14th birthday after a 10-year battle with cancer.

“Although he went through so much suffering, he was still the happiest and most cheerful person I’ve ever known. He taught me that with bravery and faith, anything is possible,” Baron said.

Baron, who has achieved local and international recognition as an artist, wrote one of his most popular radio hits, A Lion’s Heart, in memory of his cousin. Having been a Cansa ambassador for two years, He also regularly employs his talents in the service of what he describes as an incredible organisation, performing at Cansa charity events, as well as fundraisers for other campaigns.

But his latest charitable effort will involve something of a more physical challenge.

Asked why he has chosen the cycle challenge as a platform to raise funds and awareness, Baron replied, “I have always wanted to ride the 94.7km race for a purpose, and what better way to ride in memory of my little cousin. It will be a personal challenge for myself too.”

Baron’s training schedule has had to fit into an already-full calendar, with spinning classes during the week and weekend rides between gigs and performances. As a first-time cyclist, he believes that the distance will be his biggest challenge, but shows enthusiasm for the sport.

“It is such an awesome sport to get involved in, because it’s a lot about will-power and mind over matter… if I keep in mind that I’m riding for all cancer sufferers, then it’s easy compared to what they had to go through,” he added.
