Arrest for attempted bribery

DIEPSLOOT - Two men were arrested at Diepsloot Police Station after allegedly attempting to bribe the station commander.

The men, aged 34 and 40 were caught after Gauteng Provincial Head Office Anti-Corruption Investigators set a trap for them on the afternoon of 2 September. The pair were arrested shortly after handing R5 000 in cash to Colonel Amos Balatse, station commander at Diepsloot Police Station. The cash was seized by police.

According to a report by Diepsloot police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela attempts to corrupt Balatse began while Diepsloot police officers were involved in the facilitation of a dispute between two local groups over the control of a church in Diepsloot Ext 10. One of the suspects allegedly phoned Balatse on numerous occasions, requesting the station commander to use his power to influence the outcome of the facilitation process.

The suspects will appear in Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on charges of bribery.
