Mulbarton roadblock a success

LONEHILL - In response to calls from residents, a Sector 4 Douglasdale police team held a roadblock on Mulbarton Road early on 11 August.

Community members had complained of taxis using Mulbarton, Riverside and Robert Bruce roads as an alternative route to William Nicol Drive to avoid rush hour traffic.

The operation began at 6am and lasted two hours, during which police stopped about 40 vehicles. Each driver was required to present a valid permit to indicate the correct routes were being followed, and the taxis were searched for illegal substances. About 20 spot fines were issued.

Local residents joined in by serving coffee and sandwiches to the police officers. According to advocate Jean Berdou, chairperson of the Honeydew Cluster and Douglasdale Community Policing Forum, the operation received positive feedback from the community.

“This is part of an ongoing operation to force more controls on the conduct of taxis,” Berdou added.
