Residents sick of smash and grabs

PAULSHOF - Paulshof residents believe that the intersection of Witkoppen and Umhlanga roads in Paulshof has become a smash and grab hotspot.

A post on the Paulshof Security Initiative Facebook page warned that on 13 August at about 7.15pm, a resident witnessed five or six men run into the bumper-to- bumper traffic on Witkoppen Road and proceeded to smash car windows.

The resident apparently managed to pull off the road, but one of the men did try to punch through her window despite the smash and grab protective film on the window. This is not the first time Paulshof has been plagued by smash and grabs. A user commenting on the Facebook post said, “The authorities will do something when somebody dies there.” Another user commented, “We have seen so many [smash and grabs] at that intersection the one time a man behind us and a woman in front of us got hit at the same time. I got out the car to chase the one guy, but realised there would be nothing I could do if I got close enough, and nobody got out their cars to assist.”

Captain Kym Cloete, head of communications for the Sandton police said the police were only aware of one smash and grab incident that occurred in the area on 13 August. “The public should keep all valuables out of sight,” she said. “All intersections of Witkoppen Road are a problem.” Cloete added that visible patrols and undercover operations were held regularly by the Sandton police, but the police officers move throughout the Sandton area according to crime trends.
