Road closures for Walk the Talk

JOBURG - One of Joburg’s biggest walking events, the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk is around the corner.

Residents of the Parks are warned to be aware of the road closures that will be implemented on 27 July.

Thousands of walkers will converge on Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia – the start and end point for the event.

This year, the walk will be commemorating 20 years of freedom and democracy by walking 20km for 20 years of freedom.

Four different walks with staggered starting times will take place on the day. To ensure the safety of all walkers, residents and motorists, a number of roads in and around Johannesburg North and the Johannesburg CBD will be closed to traffic on the day.

According to Talk 702 media liaison, Pippa Rowles the roads will be managed to ensure minimal obstruction to traffic, and roads will be re-opened as soon as the intersection is clear of walkers.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck said over the years the organisation of the event had become better.

“The walk only affects a bit of my ward and yes, there will be those who complain about the road closures and the noise,” he said.

Ward 87 councillor, Amanda Forsythe said she noticed that those who chose not to participate in the event usually just decided to have a quiet day at home rather than battle through road closures.

“A few years ago I created a multi-event pass for my suburbs for those affected by big events such as Walk the Talk, Jazz on the Lake and the 94.7 Cycle Challenge, and I have given them to my residents’ associations to distribute,” she added.

“The pass is valid for two years, stuck on the windscreen of your car and saves residents the trouble of having to collect a pass for every event that happens in and around Zoo Lake and Emmarentia Dam.”
