Tragedy takes its toll on Kingfisher Drive

Megan writes:

There was a near tragedy on 22 July when a sweet little doggy ran into the road and was hit by a car. Luckily the dog was ok – a bit bruised – but fine.

The whole incident got me thinking though. Kingfisher Park in Douglasdale is well known by dog lovers in the area – but this seems to be forgotten by motorists, who speed along Kingfisher Drive.

The incident left everyone involved pretty shaken. It all happened very quickly: one minute the dog was safe, and next we heard screeching breaks. The owner of the dog ran into the road to tend to his beloved friend, only to be almost hit by a speeding car himself!

It is pretty ironic that the dog who was hit is extremely well behaved. My dogs would have started chasing the cars, should they have been the ones to jump through the fence. What I have taken away from the whole incident is that all dogs, no matter how well-trained, need to be picked up before their owners approach the gate; while motorists driving along Kingfisher Drive need to be aware that dogs and children are in the area and they should approach with caution.

I would also like to call on our ward councillor, Chris Santana, to assist all the dog-crazy people in Douglasdale in this regard. I would like higher speed bumps put on Kingfisher Drive and a spotlight on the road, outside the park. And for those who don’t have dogs – a child could easily run into the road, too.
