Veteran performer Michael Richards in new whimsical comedy
MONTECASINO - Michael Richards joined fellow theatre greats and newcomers in 'Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike' at the Pieter Toerien Theatre.
Richard’s impressive career has spanned 41 years and an astonishing range of roles, ranging from Shakespearean tragedy to pantomime.
He has worked in television, radio and film, and has won a multitude of awards.
He now bends his theatrical talents to the task of playing middle-aged, melancholy Vanya in Christopher Durang’s award-winning dark comedy, Vania and Sonia and Masha and Spike.
Richard, who studied drama at the University of Cape Town after being bitten by the acting bug in high school, was attracted to Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike not only by its award-winning script, but by its stellar cast and director. The most interesting aspect of his own character, Vanya, is his uncertainty, Richard said.
Vanya’s mingling of the poignant and the humorous is well-suited to Richard’s character as an actor, which comfortably spans all genres of theatre and prefers none.
The play as a whole, meanwhile, is “delicious”, said Richard. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike comes highly recommended to Johannesburg audiences by this star performer, as “a beautifully written piece of good theatre that is witty, fun and whimsical”.
