Councillor says he’s not corrupt

KYA SANDS - Democratic Alliance councillor for Ward 96, Matome Mafokwane is refuting claims made by a residents' group in Kya Sand that he is embroiled in corruption.

Mafokwane approached the Fourways Review with the information that the group had accused him of pocketing bribes from contractors appointed by the municipality to render services in the ward. The group also alleged that he obtained sub-contracts from main contractors rendering services in Ward 96, and allocated jobs to friends in municipality projects.

According to Mafokwane the accusations also included a rumour that he acquired a mansion in Dainfern with money paid by contractors in Ward 96, that he acquired a luxury 4X4 vehicle which is being kept in Polokwane, and that he was appointed as a service provider at Cosmo City Mall offering security and cleaning services.

None of the members of the group who made the claims have come forth to comment on the allegations.

In response to the allegations made against him Mafokwane said he was willing to submit himself to any investigations that seek to test the validity of the claims and should a need arise he will be willing to step aside during the process to ensure that no interference occurs. “I maintain innocence and challenge these accusers to provide any evidence linking my office to corruption and fraud,” he said.

Mafokwane suggested that the group which was making the allegations against him should approach the nearest police station and file a criminal charge against him, or approach the council speakers office to lodge a formal complaint and ask for his removal.
