Sunflowers brighten Barnyard stage

RIVONIA - The Sunflower Fund hosted a fundraising event at the Rivonia Barnyard Theatre which included a performance of the musical production, Strictly Number Ones.

Ingrid Krul of The Sunflower Fund explained that the organisation was a non-profit charity that had been committed to increasing the number of members on the South African Bone Marrow registry. Over the past 14 years they have helped to increase the registry from 800 to 65 000 members.

The organisation hosts fundraising events such as the one held at Rivonia Barnyard Theatre to help raise the necessary funds to pay for tissue typing tests for those who cannot afford them, in order to grow the registry.

Krul said for thousands of South Africans that were diagnosed each year with life-threatening blood disorders such as leukaemia, a bone marrow transplant was their only hope of survival. “This is a daunting and traumatic task, with the chance of finding a matching donor being just one in 100 000,” she said.

“Increasing the donor base will improve the chances of patients finding their life saving match,” Krul added. “You may be someone’s only chance. Think about it and take the steps to save a life.”
