Biggest ever budget for Joburg

JOBURG - The City of Joburg will present its R32 billion budget for the 2014/15 financial year on 27 May.

According to the city council, the budget will rank as the biggest ever delivered by a South African municipality.

The budget, which will be presented by MMC for Finance Geoffrey Makhubo at Joburg Theatre, will include infrastructure spend for projects detailed in the Integrated Development Plan and the Growth and Development Strategy.

These include transport integration plans and combating climate change.

Makhubo’s speech will detail the city council’s capital expenditure in the coming year, including the amount of money to be spent in maintaining the entity’s aging infrastructure.

Makhubo will also announce the rate of increase in water, electricity, refuse and sanitation costs.

This increase will be partly offset by rebates for business and the elderly.

Further, the budget speech is expected to give substance to the theme developed by Mayor Parks Tau during his State of the City Address.

During Tau’s address earlier this year, he said that the city council was financially in the best shape with a net surplus of R3.4 billion at the end of June 2013.
