Burglars on the run after shootout

OLIVEDALE - Douglasdale police successfully recovered a vehicle belonging to suspects who were on the run from Linden police after a shootout in Olivedale on 15 May.

At around 1pm on 15 May a security officer, who was patrolling Olivedale Extension 1, noticed a car parked on the side of Kevin Road. The security officer went to get the registration number of the vehicle when he noticed that the gate to a home on the other side of the road was open. He then saw a man run out of the property.

The man, as well as a second suspect, pointed a firearm at the officer while trying to drive away. The officer fired seven shots at the vehicle hitting the back of the car and taking out the front tyre. The suspects continued to speed away but another security officer, who was in the area, managed to take down the registration number of the vehicle and see which direction the suspects were heading.

Douglasdale police were called in and they pursued the suspects who were driving on Malibongwe Drive heading towards the N1 highway. The suspects abandoned their vehicle on the N1 on-ramp due to tyre damage and fled on-foot.

Police are currently combing the area for any traces of the suspects with the K9 unit.

The suspects’ vehicle was found to contain many expensive stolen items such as speakers, a PlayStation, TV and other electronic equipment. The police also recovered gloves, balaclavas and an axe which had possibly been used to break into houses.

The registration number has been identified as belonging to a resident of Soweto. The same car and registration number has been positively linked to a number of cases at the Linden Police Station.

Douglasdale police urge residents who have had a break-in within the past 24 hours to please contact them as the stolen goods recovered from the vehicle must have been from another incident which was most probably in the area.
