Layla’s a fairy princess for day

KYALAMI - Lonehill ependymoma sufferer, Layla O'Neill celebrated her fifth birthday surrounded by family, friends and supporters.

Layla was diagnosed with ependymoma, which is a type of childhood cancer, last year. Since then her mother has been trying to raise funds for her to receive an experimental treatment in America.

However in March this year, Layla’s family was told by doctors that nothing more could be done for her. (‘A mother’s love and hope’, Fourways Review, week ending 28 March)

Layla’s mother Sharyn and a host of family friends decided to use their remaining time with Layla to make her dreams and wishes come true while raising awareness of the condition which she suffers from.

For Layla’s fifth birthday, Sharyn decided to hold a fairytale-themed party with friends and family as well as members of the public who wanted to contribute to Layla’s well-being. The birthday party also raised funds for ependymoma research.

The party was held in the picturesque setting of Saddlebrook Estate and guests really got into the fairytale spirit with ball gowns, tiaras and wands.

Layla, who now has trouble walking, arrived at the party in a horse and carriage alongside her mom and dad. Despite the difficulties that Layla is currently experiencing due to her illness, she thoroughly enjoyed being around other children and being treated like a fairy princess for the day.
