JOBURG - After a string of public holidays and a national election, most Johannesburgers are probably feeling worn out.

Here’s our suggestions for a weekend of fun, frivolity, rest and relaxation — and for treating mom to something special.

10 May

Joburg’s original craft beer festival will return to Marks Park, Emmarentia.

The festival will feature over 100 craft beers from around the country, gourmet food trucks, stalls by the city’s favourite eateries, games, music and a children’s entertainment area.

If more sylvan surrounds appeal to you, the Jozi Food Market at Pirates Sports Club will take on a Mother’s Day theme.

Among the treats that will be available are cupcake gift boxes.

Take in some local sightseeing on a walking tour of Parktown, west of Jan Smuts Avenue, with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation.

The tour will look at some of the architectural gems and the colourful personalities behind them.

Indulge in some arts and culture with Vuyani Dance Company’s stellar 15th anniversary production, Full Moon.

The show features a cast of 25 dancers, the South African National Youth Orchestra and two vocalists, and takes audiences on a journey through the cosmos, to the mountains and rivers of earth.

Spoil mom at a garden party at Illovo restaurant, La Vie en Rose.

Organised by Princess Alice Adoption Home and hosted by Top Billing presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee, the party will begin with breakfast, and will feature a children’s talent show.

Mothers can also look forward to lunch, prize giveaways, talks about fashion and style, beauty and pamper sessions, and fashion shows.

Children and men will also be entertained, with plays and a ‘man cave’, respectively.

The party will take place between 9am and 4pm.

This year’s 702 Mother’s Day Concert at the Zoo will feature the talents of Elvis Blue, Jamali, the Chamber Orchestra of Johannesburg under the baton of Kutlwano Masote, and acapella group Complete.

Concert-goers are encouraged to bring chairs, a blanket and a picnic basket.

The SA Lipizzaners will host a Mother’s Day performances at the SA Lipizzaner Hall in Kyalami.

Children are encouraged to bring their mothers to see the stallions perform to the tunes of Mamma Mia.

Shows will take place at 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Sparing a thought for the mothers of the kidnapped Nigerian girls, 14-year-old Mickayla and 10-year-old Kristen Peters and some of the school friends will raise awareness and inform community members of what they know about the incident, at Carlswald Lifestyle Centre.

Ferrari fans can look forward to the sights and sounds of Maranello’s magnificent machines and the final race of the ninth Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco Historique at the piazza at Montecasino.

The race will be broadcast on a large outdoor screen during the Ferrari show day.
