Warning of flooding in Joburg
Motorists are warned of potholes that may be less visible on the roads due to flooding.
This comes after three days of non-stop rain that is expected to cause flooding in low-lying areas until Friday.
The Gazette has been running a pothole campaign aimed at getting the Johannesburg Roads Agency to address the problem of potholes in the area.
Although some potholes have been fixed in the past two weeks, many more remain.
Spokesperson of the Johannesburg Road Agency Bertha Peters-Scheepers said potholes cannot be repaired during rainy conditions.
“In these cases the roads agency team secures the area temporarily and then repairs the pothole once the weather has cleared,” she said.
Johannesburg Emergency Services warned motorists to not underestimate flooded roads.
Emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe advised motorists to not cross flooded roads as vehicles can be swept away.
“We also advise that people stay away from storm water drainage systems,” she said.
She said officials were monitoring the situation, and at the time of commenting, the only report of serious flooding was that of the Westdene Dam which was overflowing.
Wayne Minnaar, Johannesburg Metro police Superintendent, also warned motorists to be weary on the roads and avoid flooded roads.
