Off-duty police officer goes the extra mile

FOURWAYS - A dedicated officer chased and caught a suspect while he was off duty.

This after the 26-year-old man had allegedly stolen a cellphone and handbag from a motorist.

According to head of communications for Diepsloot Police Station, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, the incident occurred on the corner of Summit Road and the R511 in Diepsloot.

The motorist was waiting for the traffic light at the intersection to turn green when the suspect approached her open window. It is reported he threatened the woman with a handgun and demanded she get out of the vehicle.

Mavimbela explained that her screams alerted Constable Tshwarelo Mokaba, who was stopped behind her at the traffic light. Mokaba got out of his car and saw the suspect fleeing on foot carrying a handbag allegedly taken from the victim’s car. He chased the man across the road and into Diepsloot Ext 2 informal settlement.

“I chased after him him until he got tired,” Mokaba said.

Mavimbela said the motorist could not contain her joy when the fugitive was caught.

The suspect will be charged with armed robbery and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.

Mavimbela said police appeal to motorists to always be alert and cautious when approaching the Summit Road and R511 intersection, and to keep their car windows and doors locked.
