E-toll on a roll

JOBURG - More than 1.2 million users have registered for e-tags according to the South African Road Agency (Sanral).

Vusi Mona, the general manager for communications at Sanral, thanked motorists for their positive response to the e-tolling system.

“We appreciate what they [motorists] have done and would like to urge other motorists to follow suit in order to enjoy the discounts associated with having an e-tag,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to motorists who did not have e-tags but continued to pay for their use of the tolled roads. He encouraged these motorists to get tagged and reap the rewards offered.

“We believe that in spite of the billing challenges emanating largely from unregistered users and the customer service issues at some of our service outlets, the system is working and motorists are co-operating with us,” Mona said.

The spokesperson also questioned the credibility of research conducted by the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance which noted that motorists were not registering for e-tags.

He said Sanral had introduced complementary services to the e-toll system in an effort to make it as efficient as possible. One of these services is the Freeway Management System which informs motorists of any accidents on the highway or if they are going to be delayed.

Another addition is the on-road service which ensures that if there are any accidents on the highway, Sanral can respond as quickly as possible.
