Put safety first while training

JOBURG- There are a number of important events coming up on runners' and cyclists' diaries and athletes are urged to bear safety in mind while training.

As race days draw closer avid athletes often go the extra-mile to ensure they are fit and ready by squeezing in additional training in the early mornings and evenings.

Clive Humphrey, managing director of ADT central region said while training was important so was safety.

“It is important to let someone know that you are heading out and when you expect to return so that if your are not home as scheduled the alarm can be raised immediately and no time will be wasted in the event of an emergency,” he said.

Humphrey had the following tips for anyone who was training:

– Try to avoid running or cycling when it is dark.

– Do not go out jogging or cycling alone, invite friends or family to go with you.

– Before you leave home ensure that your cellphone battery is charged.

– Take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or taxi or make a phone call if needs be.

– Wear bright reflective clothing so that motorists are able to see you easily. Reflective strips on your shoes are not sufficient.

– Never go running or cycling while listening to music through earphones. This might prevent you from hearing an oncoming vehicle, potential mugger or vicious dog.

-Vary your route as often as you can and steer clear of very quiet or unsavoury areas.

Humphrey added that it was also important to make sure your family and home were safe while you were out, even if it was for just for an hour or two.

“Activate the alarm system and always ensure that you have locked the front door and gates properly behind you,” he said.
