My Future, My Career launches its fifth season

MONTECASINO- Nedbank launched the fifth season of its My Future, My Career programme at La Toscana in Montecasino.

The programme offers free career guidance to underprivileged pupils across the country in the form of a 16-episode, talk-show format series screened at strategically selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas close to the communities where these pupils live.

Kone Gugushe, divisional executive for corporate social responsibility at Nedbank, said that learners who participate in the programme come from backgrounds where they get limited exposure to career options, and this programme enlightens them to the opportunities available.

“The programme also broadens their perspective and gives them hope for a better future,” she said.

The programme profiles 116 careers across 16 industries including accounting, law, entrepreneurship, mining, engineering, education, health, construction, travel and tourism, real estate, arts and culture, information technology and conservation.

At the launch, an inspiring speech was made by Glen Mnisi, a beneficiary of the programme who is now studying accounting at the University of Johannesburg. Mnisi, who lived in Thokoza township watched an episode of the My Future, My Career series in 2010 and was inspired to work towards a career in accounting.

Martin Sweet, managing director of Primestars marketing, the company that facilitates the programme, was extremely excited about the programme’s fifth year.

“The considerable level of support we have received from government, the private sector and the academic fraternity echoes the common sentiment that career education plays a vital role in developing young leaders and overcoming our country’s challenges of skills shortage, unemployment and poverty,” he said.
