Young singer reaches her target

A big-hearted teenager raised money for her friend to join her at an expo overseas.

Thirteen-year-old Shannon Webb has reached her target of raising R70 000 for her friend, Reabetsoe Machepha to join her at the ARTS Expo in Orlando, Florida in June 2014.

Webb and Machepha became friends at the International Talent Showcase held at Montecasino in October (‘Youngsters vie for top place in talent show’, Fourways Review, week ending 1 November 2013). When they were both chosen to perform at the ARTS Expo, Webb knew she had to do something to help her new friend, as Machepha’s family was unable to afford the flights and accommodation.

Less than a month ago, Webb embarked on a mission to raise funds using her own talent for singing. She did many corporate performances and also approached corporations for sponsorship. Webb has just reached the target of R70 000 which will ensure that Machepha can also participate in the ARTS expo.

Webb started piano at the age of eight, and to help her musical ear, her music teacher suggested singing lessons. Suffice to say piano soon took a backseat when Webb realised that she had a natural talent for singing.

Webb said that her role model used to be Michael Jackson but she also admires country star, Carrie Underwood.

“I think Carrie Underwood is very talented because she can do both country and pop – which is something I’d like to do,” Webb said. However Webb is adamant that she doesn’t want to be compared to anyone and would like to create her own reputation.
