Another voter registration in February

FOURWAYS - Eligible voters who failed to register will have a second chance to do so during an additional round of voter registration next year.

Following a review of the outcomes of the first voter registration weekend, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced that it will hold a final registration drive on 8 and 9 February, 2014.

The IEC said in a statement that eligible voters who had not registered had inundated its call centre and social media with queries about additional registration opportunities.

The commission added that the decision to hold the registration in February is to ensure that eligible voters who had yet to apply for their identity documents will have sufficient time to do so.

“The February registration weekend will be the final opportunity for new voters to register and for registered voters to change their voting station ahead of the 2014 national and provincial elections,” said the commission.

During the voter registration weekend in November, poor weather conditions and protests in some parts of the country hampered voter registration.

In Bekkersdal in Gauteng, registration stations were closed after service delivery protests turned violent.

There are currently 24 112 414 registered voters, which is 76.7 percent and the commission hopes to achieve an 80 percent registration of eligible voters before the voters roll is closed.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to announce the election date, which will close the voters’ roll, shortly after the registration weekend.
