Cyclists and supporters share challenge fun

MIDRAND - Cyclists panted all around Johannesburg in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge while supporters encouraged them along the route.

Some of the cyclists were riding competitively, some were riding in support of an organisation or person, some were riding with their fiance in order to stand a chance to win a dream honeymoon and some were just riding for fun.

Despite the cyclists’ reasons for taking up the challenge, many put thought into their outfits and the crowd cheered them for their efforts.

The brides and grooms to be dressed in cycle-friendly versions of bridal wear and supporters at the intersection of Main Road and the R55 in Kyalami hummed the tune, ‘Here Comes the Bride’ as they cycled past on the home stretch.

Other memorable costumes were cyclists wearing angel wings, tutus, tinsel on their helmets and one cyclist tied a balloon to his helmet and joked that it was useful to hold up his head during the tough race.

Camaraderie was aplenty among the cyclists as some helped to push each other up the hills, some stopped to help mend each others bicycles and some stopped with the tired athletes to catch their breath.

Spectators also shared in the good spirit of the day as they came out to support the cyclists. A group of supporters in Kyalami even sat in a blow-up paddle pool in the back of their bakkie to cheer on the spectators from a cool perch.

While most motorists enjoyed the excitement of the day, some motorists did put up a fuss about the road blocks. Metro police and marshals were at points along the route to guide the motorists.
