Speaking the language of horses

SUN VALLEY- Lawrence Ndlovu and Gudani Tshihume, who are grooms at Patrick Kaye stables, are among less than a hundred people worldwide who are able to ride in the Horse-talker and Freeform method.

Patrick Kaye, a British Horse Society instructor and former animal trainer, developed the method of riding.

Kaye said, “The horse whisperer is a myth. I call it horse-talking because really it’s a very logical system in which you speak to your horse with the expectation that it will understand you.”

He explained that the Freeform method is based on the premise that you can get a horse to do what you want by engaging and using its intellect instead of using pain inflicting devices like bits and even bridles.

Ndlovu and Tshihume have worked as grooms at Patrick Kaye stables for seven years. Tshihume’s father had worked as a groom for Kaye for over 20 years. Three years ago the grooms decided to take their affinity for horses to the next level and took up riding.

Kaye said, “It’s actually easier for them to ride in the Freeform method because they do not have to try to forget the Classical method of riding.”

He went on to explain that working with horses has allowed Ndlovu and Tshihume to learn a skill that will potentially turn into a career for them.

Kaye quipped, “Lawrence recently competed in his first showjumping competition. I told him that he had to come first but unfortunately he only placed second.”

Ndlovu and Tshihume have also started teaching riding lessons and are eager to get new students.

Tshihume said, “I just love everything about horses. Riding makes me feel great and I would like to share that.”
